The last of the super long days is over. No more 9AM arrive 10:30PM Finish days. Tomorrow is a half day, and I will be unable to attend the 2:30PM game because of another commitment. The following day is a 4 game 9AM to 830PM day. So here is a recap of the days action and setup for the final day of round robin play.
GAME 1 VANCOUVER NW GIANTS 3 NY ISLANDERS 2
Not much to talk about, it was a very sloppy game throughout. It completed Vancouver’s round robin with 7 pts (3-0-1) and eventually would win them the pool. Game was characterized by sloppy play and few quality chances from either team. The highlight, both coaches getting pissed off at the ref, unfortunately no one really blew their top.
GAME 2 PA MINTOS 10 HURON PERTH LAKERS 1
So it wasn’t a strong start in these first two games. PA was by far the better team getting to the net basically at will. Huron kept up very early but then faded fast and PA took over. Nothing really special to talk about in this game, was meaningless, both teams are out of contention.
GAME 3 ONTARIO AVALANCHE 5 GP STORM 3
As stated before, tough to cheer for the Grande Prairie team as they are a bit of a goon squad. Game was close all the way through which toned it down a bit but hey first impressions. A pretty exciting back and forth game early and same great scoring chances. A late push by Grande Prairie made the end very exciting but was not to be. Glad to see the Ontario team leave with a couple of wins, they were a better team then some that will get wild cards, tough pool though. Both of these teams had been previously eliminated from contention. Ontario finished their games today.
GAME 4 SSAC 4 UFA BISONS 2
This game was the best of the day by far and really a good game. So fantastic back and forth play from both teams and some great chances created. SSAC was the better team but not by a lot. The SSAC goalie, Berlin, was absolutely awesome making a number of excellent stops, likewise the Bisons goalie was very strong. Fun game, the only let down was some very subpar officiating making a lot of calls on things that weren’t penalties. I think early in the game those calls stole some of UFA’s steam and late in the game, with the score 4-0, the referee only called SSAC allowing UFA to get 2 late goals. Stripes tried to play too much of a factor, worst job of the tournament.
GAME 5 CALGARY NORTHSTARS 4 MARKHAM WAXERS 1
Well Markham is a pretty bad team, actually the worst team in the tournament I have seen in a long time. They are disorganized and take a lot of stupid penalties. This game could have been a blow out, but the Markham goalie was awesome and the Stars rested their best players pretty much all game. Star finished their round robin off 4-0, something that hasn’t been done by a Northstars team in a very long time (can’t remember one year they did). Congrats to a great coaching staff for starting the road back in that program, Tyler Drader really stepping up with his assistants. Best part of this game, making fun of Markham’s coach. This guy is a full blown asshole and animated whiner. First off you can tell his team is lost on the ice. He has all these funky face-off setups that are just stupid. His team has no idea what to do in the defensive zone, all of which could be chalked up to needing to learn but he yells at everyone. He called a timeout at 2-0 to yell at his team, a team that had played 2 game and had a combined goals for of 1 and goals against of 17. Just a terrible team. He berated the trainer at one point, so much so that one of the players on the bench went over and put his arm around the trainer to comfort the guy. What a prick of a coach. Everyone gets upset but he was always upset and yelling.
SSAC is your pool winner 4-0
Potential Wild card to UFA who have to beat Tisdale in the final day
This is the pool of weak teams
Vancouver NW Giants win the pool with a 3-0-1 record.
Wildcard potential for 2 teams. CAC is 2-1 and plays NY Islanders with a win they are second in pool and will likely get a wild card at 6 points. If they lose the door opens a crack for the Flames who have to beat the contacts to finish 2-1-1 but still will be in tight.
No winner decided in fact it won’t be until the completion of the round robin. The last game at Max Bell features a duel for the pool winner between the Regina Pats and Calgary Buffaloes. To the winner the pool and to the loser a wild card spot.
The first pool to declare a winner with the 4-0-0 Calgary Northstars.
Cariboo Cougars have Markham tomorrow and could put themselves in a good place to grab a wild card at 3-1-0.
Germans and Valley West will battle for the pool win, if Valley West wins they get the pool a tie or loss will land Germany the pool.
Wildcard hopes are slight for the Calgary Royals if Valley West loses and Calgary wins, but very slight after blowing a two goal lead int their game today.
FINAL DAY ROUND ROBIN GAMES TO SEE
9:00AM Doesn’t hold much but their are slight chances at wild cards at FDB Arena with Flames vs Saskatoon Contacts playing and Centennial with Royals playing against the PA Mintos.
MAX BELL – Germans vs Valley West for pool winner
FDB – UFA Bisons playing for a wildcard need to beat eliminated Tisdale
CENT – CAC should put themselves in the wild card hunt with a win over NY Islanders in the weakest pool.
MAX BELL – Best game to be seen this day With Buffs and Regina playing for pool supremacy
FDB – Cougars playing for Wildcard should pound the daylights out of Markham
CENT – not worth the trip unless you know someone in the game.
Sad to see the days winding down in my favourite time of year. My wife however has a list of chores for me to complete, so she is less sad.
